Abstract: The condition of spent fuel on delivery to a repository is affected by its service in the reactor and by the postirradiation activities including wet and dry storage; fuel examination, fuel reconstitution, and rod consolidation; and handling and transporting. Current assessments indicate that spent LWR fuel delivered to the repository will not differ markedly from the spent fuel discharged from the reactor, even after several decades of wet and dry storage. However, potential impacts of fuel with cladding breaches exposed to oxidizing atmospheres and effects of crud loosened by extended wet storage need to be anticipated.
