LRFD for Engineered Wood Construction: ASCE Pre-Standard, Wood Industry Initiative

by Joseph F. Murphy, Structural Reliability Consultants, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structural Safety and Reliability

Abstract:

The structural wood community in the United States is in the process of developing a reliability-based consensus Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) standard for engineered wood construction. This presentation will provide an historical view of this process, starting in 1976, through the forming of an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) task committee from 1983 to 1987, to the status of a Wood Industry Initiative started in 1988. Hurdles, obstacles, and concerns specific to wood and wood construction are highlighted. Near and long-term goals are presented.
