Abstract:

During the last 11 years, thousands earth dams have been inspected. Here are four that were rehabilitated. Army Corps inspections are phase I of the program, and have been completed. The vast majority of the dams needed repairs. State agencies have subsequently implemented phase II of the safety program, which consists of more detailed investigations in accordance with guidelines established by the Corps. A standard phase II investigation includes evaluation of subsurface, hydrologic, hydraulic and stability conditions. The conclusions and recommendations presented in phase II reports are the basis for design of subsequent rehabilitation projects.
