Asphalt Pavements of the Future

by Mike Acott, Natl Asphalt Pavement Assoc, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering 21st Century Highways

Abstract:

There will be major changes in the Hot Mix Asphalt Industry throughout the next decade and into the 21st century. Acquisitions, diversification, SHRP, the emergence of new technologies and materials, the influence of regulatory agencies, staffing adjustments by highway agencies, computers, traffic increases, construction equipment developments, funding considerations and many other effects will all impact the Industry. Although this paper is prepared for U.S. engineers, it is interesting to note that many of the issues raised are also applicable to overseas markets. Discussion with counterparts in Japan, Europe, Australia and elsewhere, indicates that these issues and likely responses have become global in nature.
