Abstract:

The Barataria Estuarine System is part of the Mississippi River which swept back and forth across Louisiana for thousands of years. Barataria Bay no longer receives the enrichment of the overflow of water and sediment of the Mississippi River and its distributaries because those water systems have been leveed and even before the levees the River decided to follow a different course than the Barataria System. The major environmental factors hastening the demise of the Estuary have been the continual encroachment of urban development. This paper discusses various aspects of the Barataria Bay Estuary and its resources, and the development of a park there.
