Abstract:

The San Francisco District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers recently completed construction of a breakwater at Fisherman's Wharf. The construction, completed ahead of schedule and below budget, provided protection for the fishing fleet based at Fisherman's Wharf and the historic fleet berthed at the Maritime Museum on Hyde Street Pier. Maintenance of the fleets preserves the historic and maritime flavor of the area. This paper discusses the need for the breakwater and describes the project, including breakwater design, precast concrete piles, and related subjects.
