Abstract:

A method is proposed for using the standard penetration N-values to predict the load-settlement curves for different piles used in Egyptian soils. The method is based on H. G. Poulos-E. H. Davis elasticity solution with modifications to account for the change in Young's modulus of the soil with the method of construction and the increase of the load on the pile. Design charts are presented for quick estimate of settlement at working and ultimate loads. Eighty two actual pile load tests for both driven and bored piles in Egyptian soils have been analyzed and a close agreement between predicted and measured load-settlement curves is obtained.
