Abstract: Traditionally the basic engineering course in 'Mechanics of Solids' has proven to be a challenge to both the students and faculty, for although the fundamental concepts are not complex, there are a lot of them presented in a typical course. An increase in the effectiveness of learning these concepts has been achieved through utilizing the capabilities of the microcomputer by means of a series of interactive Computer-Aided-Learning (CAL) modules developed at Northwestern University. The student can devote his/her full attention to studying the fundamental concepts of the particular material being presented. The use of these modules also permits the student to study both the solution techniques, and the 'cause-and-effect' relationships of a large number of problems.
