Abstract:

The use of existing powerhouse, penstocks, dams and unit configuration, all provide for a quick cost effective method to increase output from an existing turbine installation. This paper deals with a specific uprating application at the Portal Powerhouse, which is operated by the Southern California Edison Company. In conjunction with Southern California Edison engineers, Sorumsand Verksted A/S, Norway, effectively increased the output on this unit from 10 MW to 11. 8 MW. The operating conditions in both cases were comparable.
