Abstract:

Cyclic loading behaviour of Beaufort Sea silt has been studied under triaxial conditions, with and without static shear stress, to define the resistance to liquefaction or cyclic straining under various cyclic stress conditions. Unsymmetrical cyclic loading led to compressive failure, in which the mode of failure was dependent on the amount of shear stress reversal. Symmetrical cyclic loading led to an extension failure characterized by large cyclic strains.
