Abstract:

Seven transportation structures have been instrumented by the California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP), including four bridges. Records (in excess of 0. 25 g maximum acceleration) have been obtained from three highway bridges. At one bridge, a freeway overpass on Hwy 101 in Rio Dell (near Eureka in northern California), strong shaking has been recorded from three separate earthquakes. Preliminary analyses indicate that the vertical response of the bridge superstructure was greater than the horizontal response.
