Abstract:

The Cold Regions Hydrology and Hydraulics Monograph is the eighth in a series of monographs prepared by the ASCE Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering. The book is intended to provide the practicing civil engineer with information that will allow him or her to develop a basic understanding of the influences of cold temperatures on hydrologic and hydraulic processes as they relate to the design, construction, and operation of civil works. This is accomplished through a series of papers written by, for the most part, engineers who must practice the techniques on which they report. The book is divided into three main sections: 1) Cold regions hydrology, 2) cold regions hydraulics, and 3) case studies. The section on cold regions hydrology focuses on the hydrologic phenomenon that are important to engineering in cold regions, such as measurement of precipitation, assessment of snowpacks, mountain glaciers, and groundwater. The section on cold regions hydraulics focuses on measurement of streamflow, aufeis formation and prevention, the formation and growth of lake and river ice, ice jams, design and operation of water intakes, and culverts. Environmental considerations are addressed in both sections and include water quality, wetlands, and fisheries habitat. The section on case studies contains papers that describe specific projects that have or are employing the principles discussed in the sections on cold regions hydrology and hydraulics.
