Abstract:

The subsurface characterization work that a geotechnical engineer must perform is critical to the success of every project that requires the cooperation of the ground, regardless of whether it is a shallow or deep foundation system, a dam, or a groundwater remediation project. The cold hard fact is: If we don't characterize the subsurface correctly, the project is headed for trouble.
