Abstract:

The Simulation/Optimization MOdeling System (SOMOS) makes it easy to do groundwater optimization modeling for a variety of scales and situations. The SOMOA module uses analytical equations, convolution, response surface methods and classical operations research optimization methods to develop optimal water use strategies for fairly simple stream-aquifer systems. SOMOA considers groundwater pumping, stream stage changes and depletion, line and other recharge sources. TheSOMO1 module uses MODFLOW, convolution and response surface methods with classical optimization methods to optimize river-aquifer and stream-aquifer systems. The SOMO3 module uses MODFLOW, MT3DMS, response surface methods, artificial intelligence and heuristic optimization to compute optimal strategies for plume remediation, groundwater and conjunctive water management.
