Abstract:

The urban structure of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area (TMA), for practical proposes, can be characterized as monocentric. Hence, the population and economic growth in the metropolitan area generate a corresponding increase in trip volumes from suburb to central Tokyo. Given the sheer size of Tokyo's population, an efficient mass transit system is indispensible to ensure smooth movement of people.
