It is a contactless, prepaid and rechargeable card system that is designed to work for multiple modes of transit operated by multiple operators. The City Government spent almost 3 years to initiate and develop the system through the coordinated efforts of public and private sectors. Currently, the system is installed on most transit modes in Pusan - bus, metro, taxi, and minibus. The system is generating numerous benefits for transit users as well as operators. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Hanaro Traffic Card system and to discuss the process and background work of system development, the system features and resulting benefits to all related parties, including users, operators and the city.
