Abstract:

The importance of ISO 14001 as a management tool, market entry credential, or public and regulatory relations vehicle is different depending on your company, industry, regulatory jurisdiction and geo-economic location. Reasons to pursue certification include enhanced efficiency, cost savings, improved regulatory compliance, and better relationships with government agencies, community groups, and investors. Firms must balance the costs, benefits, and alternatives of ISO 14001, however, before spending the time and effort to become certified.
