Abstract:

Twin TBM starter tunnerls with mixed face conditions were successfully mined by roadheader with steel rib and shotcrete initial support beneath the Hollywood Freeway. Tunneling and total settlements were controlled through chemical grouting, controlled advance lengths, timely installation of ground support, responsive monitoring and appropriate mitigation to adverse trends. Despite a late start date to starter tunnel mining, work was advanced so that TBM mining commenced on the originally scheduled date.
