Abstract:

A compilation of twenty papers, Advances in Structural Optimization features recent contributions from the United States, Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong to improving design and performance of structures. This volume covers a wide range of contributions ranging from highly theoretical to immediate applications. The following topics are covered: 1) Optimal design using genetic algorithms, fuzzy set theory, artificial life approaches, and neural networks; 2) reliability-based optimum design of buildings and bridges; 3) optimal design based on minimum expected life-cycle cost; 4) topology and shape optimization; 5) steel and reinforced concrete frame optimization; and 6) optimization of laminated composite structures.
