Abstract:

The design of open channel facilities often calls for evaluation of a unique set of physical conditions which do not lend themselves to standard designs and textbook solutions. Consequently, experience and working knowledge are essential qualifications for the practicing engineer. A Knowledge Based Multimedia Computer System HYDOC (Hydraulic Design of Open Channels) is presented as a means to capture the knowledge of how physical parameters and hydraulic principles affect open channel design problems. The system provides an interactive consultation for approaching a typical open channel design problem and includes an analysis of flow conditions, design considerations, and water surface profiles.
