Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: North American Water and Environment Congress & Destructive Water

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the efforts by Snohomish County to acquire a drainage district (Drainage District 6) in the lower Snohomish River valley and restore freshwater tidal conditions to the area. Described are the institutional, finding and technical challenges involved in this project. As of this date (early 1996) no restoration activities have occurred; this paper is thus a report of progress to date. The project is one of largest estuarine wetland restoration projects on the west coast, and consequently is receiving a great deal of attention and interest from regulatory agencies and others interested in wetland management. Drainage District 6 is located in northern Puget Sound, in Snohomish County, approximately one mile east of Everett, Washington and 30 miles north of Seattle.
