An Environmental Ethic for ASCE

by John F. Scott, (M.ASCE),

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: North American Water and Environment Congress & Destructive Water

Abstract:

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is presently considering the addition of an environmental ethic to ASCE's Code of Ethics. The proposed environmental ethic, which may become the Eighth Canon to the Code, has been the focus of heated, albeit limited, debate for over 20 years. At the most recent Board of Direction meeting at ASCE's annual convention in October 1995, it was again discussed. This paper presents the proposed ethic and discusses its current status.
