Appropriate Sanitation Technology Advisor: A Planner's Tool in Less Developed Countries

by Larry Quinn,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: North American Water and Environment Congress & Destructive Water

Abstract:

The goal of the expert system (ES) prototype described in this paper is to create an advising method for planners, engineers and officials in Less-Developed Countries (LDCs) to utilize in first-cut reviews of appropriate sanitation options for a variety of locations and project areas. These appropriate sanitation options are developed with significant insight into local legal, cultural and economic constraints and allow for the development of rational phased improvements toward ultimate sanitation goals. The full-scale ES will ultimately be adaptable for small neighborhood project areas up to larger rural or urban areas.
