Abstract:
Water has been a critical component of most human endeavors, and its value as a recreational amenity is well-known. An increasing number of recreational impoundments are being considered as aesthetic amenities in communities. Maintaining the water quality desired at these facilities has always been challenging. We propose to discuss two case examples of such impoundments: 1) Retrofitting the existing Hollenbeck Lake; and 2) the Hansen Dam Recreational and Swim Lakes. Technical procedures perfected in the design of the improvements to the existing Hollenbeck Lake were applied to the design of the proposed Hansen Dam Recreational Lake. The treatment system was designed to include a recirculation system, sand filtration, chemical addition, and aeration. Hansen Dam Swim Lake, the size of four Olympic-sized swimming poois, was designed in accordance with strict guidelines of swimming pooi design standards, and incorporates a filtration system with ozone disinfection, sodium hypochlorite and acid injection.
