Abstract:

Water conservation, wise water use, efficient water management: no matter what terminology one uses to describe it, the fact is the topic of using less water permeates the irrigation industry. Demands for water are multiplying from every facet of our society: industrial, environmental, municipal, agricultural and the landscape. Increasingly the irrigation industry is coming under close scrutiny for its role in water use and abuse. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize the reader with current water conservation efforts of the irrigation industry, in particular those of the Irrigation Association. The Water Management Committee of the Irrigation Association has developed a long-range water conservation policy which serves as an excellent introduction to this paper.
