Abstract:

The Bureau of Reclamations Central Valley Operations Office (CVO) has responsibility for planning, implementing, overseeing, and coordinating the various operations of the Central Valley Project (CVP) in California. Toward this end, CVO personnel participate in a wide variety of efforts including data collection, analysis, system modelling and forecasting. The CVO has a number of federal and non-federal partner agencies which provide mutual support in the collection and analysis of data and modelling efforts that support operations decisions. These agencies include National Weather Service River Forecast Center (NWSRFC), California Department of Water Resources ( Corps of Engineers (COE), and Western Area Power Administration (WAPA). CVO, with assistance from the Denver TSC has undertaken a peer review of its modelling capabilities and needs, with the objective of identif potential improvements and efficiencies. Improved operational forecasting and efficiency will significantly assist Reclamation in economically managing the CVP, and meeting the objectives of providing environmental protection (including protection of endangered species), water conservation, power generation and flood control.
