Abstract:

Todays challenge at Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs) is to assess and reduce the environmental risk posed by toxic air contaminants (TACs). This paper attempts to identify the critical issues in the monitoring and control of TACs at POTWs, focusing on the applicable regulations, on the available methods to estimate TACs, and on the options for TACs control. A synoptic comparison is provided of the available control technologies for specific contaminants generated at wastewater sludge incineration facilities, including control technologies for particulate, for nitrogen oxides.
