Abstract:

The quality, timeliness and accuracy of information can give an international architectural, engineering and consulting firm a distinct competitive advantage, and the wrong system can make information management a daunting task. The author -- marketing director of BST Consultants in Tampa, Florida, a leading provider of management information systems (MIS) software -- describes the criteria firms should seek in an MIS, including the importance of a relational database-management system. Other topics include advanced client/server architecture, the need for systems to handle multiple currencies, and the shortcomings of legacy systems. A sidebar discusses the information-management experiences of the Law Companies Group Inc. of Atlanta.
