Coping with EPA's Transportation Storm Water Permit

Abstract:

EPA has released NPDES storm water monitoring data from group applicants. This paper will analyze the data to determine which pollutants are present in storm water runoff from transportation facilities. EPA created approximately 30 sectors of industry based on similar types of industrial facilities. EPA assigned all members of all groups to one of the sectors. The monitoring data will be analyzed by sector to determine specifically which type of industry discharged which pollutants in storm water. The primary focus of the paper will be the four transportation sectors that included approximately 12,000 facilities. Several hundred facilities representing the railroad, highway, water, and air sectors submitted monitoring data. Each of these sectors will be discussed and appropriate best management practices will be presented with the capability to reduce or eliminate the pollutants in storm water discharges.
