Abstract:

Six frequently used estimation methods for the Log-Pearson type 3 distribution were evaluated using both the predictive and the descriptive performance indices. Ten LP3 populations and 90 sets of observed annual maximum flood data were used for the evaluation. Computed results showed that the performance of a parameter estimation method depends on the set of population parameters chosen, and that a descriptive performance index does not have apparent relationship with its corresponding predictive index. A quantile ratio index (QRI) was developed to identify the application limits of an estimation method.
