Abstract:

A mathematical model simulating the scenarios of surface liquid spills is presented in this paper. This model describes the advance front and recession curves of surface spills based on one-dimensional overland flow equations and the method of characteristics. The physical variables related to the transport process are unified through the procedures of dimensional scaling. Of groundwater quality concern, this paper explores the maximum travel distance of the spill front, and the location of maximum seepage. On the other hand, the site location and spill duration determine the volume ratio of the spill reaching surface water. Their effects are evaluated in this paper.
