High-speed Video Analysis of Sediment-Turbulence Interaction

Results from the analysis of high-speed video recordings of particle motion and simultaneous flow visualizations in the near wall region of a turbulent open channel flow are presented. Analysis of the video images provided information about characteristics of particle motion and its interaction with coherent flow structures associated with the turbulent bursting process near the wall. The results presented herein demonstrate the valuable quantitative information that can be obtained by applying high-speed video imaging techniques to the study of sediment transport mechanics. Although the results are preliminary, they clearly indicate the fundamental role played by flow ejections on the particle entrainment mechanism. Further application of this technique would provide basic data, which could contribute to a better understanding of the physical processes involved in particle-turbulence interactions, and in particular, to clarify the intimate relation between bursting phenomena and sediment transport mechanics near the bed.
