Abstract:

A method is described for estimating the footing modulus of shallow spread foundations located near slopes of cohesionless material. The ratio of footing modulus for a shallow foundation located near a slope to the modulus of a similar footing on level ground is graphically presented. Footing modulus for a footing on level ground (the reference condition) may be estimated either from local experience or using a method presented herein. Equations are presented which relate footing modulus to the footing length, width, depth and proximity to a slope. This method compliments a similar technique recently proposed to account for the effect of slopes on footing bearing capacity. Equations and charts are empirically based on the results of 215 centrifuge model tests. Uncertainties in footing modulus estimates are discussed.
