Abstract:

Highly compressible marine clays occur extensively in coastal regions. In lieu of traditional pile or raft foundations in such weak soils, recently a flexible mat system has been developed rationally and executed successfully in Bombay, India. This paper presents salient features of this method such as soil characteristics, hypothesis adopted for evolving the foundation system, construction aspects, performance and economy. The influence of flexible mat on the behavior of virgin soil is highlighted through analytical data and typical load-settlement, time-settlement and penetration resistance curves. The mat definitely improves soil resistance, controls effectively excessive settlements and offers the most economical solution.
