Abstract:

This paper presents a case history of settlement of a light structure on San Francisco Bay Mud. Despite measured total settlements of 56 to 82 cm, the structure is still functioning 27 years after construction. Most of the settlement is due to the consolidation of the Bay Mud under the weight of areal fill. The fill was up to 3.65 m in thickness and was placed 5 years prior to construction. The paper also presents a prediction of the observed settlements using the computer program CONSOL.
