Abstract:

Laboratory tests were conducted on model caissons to better understand the settlement/deflection behavior of open ended caissons on sandy soil, with embedment depth, caisson diameter, and point of lateral load application as main parameters. Results indicate that the position of center of rotation of model caissons with larger base width are insensitive to horizontal load magnitudes, and moves towards the base with increase in base width. Also, neglecting the base resistance in arriving at ultimate capacity for lateral loads could be conservative, whereas it is uneconomical for caissons carrying predominantly vertical loads.
