Abstract:

The static approach to limit analysis using finite element modelling is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem and applied to the vertical cut problem. Whereas the kinematic approach to limit load analysis by finite elements has proved successful and efficient, the static approach is known to be less suited to finite element discretization because of the large underlying nonlinear maximization problems.
