Abstract:

The importance of the selection of the best design on the one hand and the available knowledge, on the other during the preliminary design process asks after a different kind of software than usual at present. Much of the necessary knowledge consists of simple thumbrules and experience at that phase. Expert Systems based on rules extracted from existing already builded bridges can therefore become useful design tools in future. Complicated finite element programs are often more useful in a later point of time.
