Abstract:

Recently, there has been much interest in the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to civil engineering problems. Most applications, however, have been limited to the use of feedforward-backpropagation neural network architectures. Although it is relatively simple in structure and development, this type of neural network is not always the most appropriate for many problems. Each neural network paradigm has its own weaknesses and strengths which make it suited to certain types of problems. This paper, therefore, provides guidance on the adoption of various neural network paradigms for different classes of civil engineering problem.
