Abstract:

Using generalized continuum mechanics, generalized damage theories for granular materials in comminution processes are proposed. The generalization is accomplished by treating the average grain rotation as an independent variable (either Cosserat Theory (CT) or Strain Gradient Theory (SGT)). In the derivation of the effective elastic moduli it is assumed that progressive fracturing leads to an increase of the particle number (decreasing average grain radius).
