Abstract:

The development of the selection module in a knowledge-based expert system REtaining STructure EXpert (RESTEX) for automated selection, design and analysis of earth retention systems is presented in this paper. RESTEX is based on blackboard architecture and currently supports seven types of earth retention structures. Expert system shell EXSYS Professional was used to develop the user interface and the knowledge base in the selection module. A practical application of the RESTEX system for automated retention structure selection is illustrated through a typical system execution leading to the selection of a gabion retaining structure.
