Abstract:

The city of Yakima recently completed a Comprehensive Stromwater Management plan to: 1) assess current and projected local runoff quality and 2) develop strategies to improve receiving water quality by improving the discharge quality of stormwater runoff. The project was partially funded by a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology. Assessments and strategies included both surface and ground waters. Strategies also included efforts to integrate projects with local recreational and educational programs. This paper discusses the characterization of Yakima urban area runoff and strategies developed to reduce pollutant loading to surface and ground waters.
