Recycling Portland Cement Concrete Pavement at the Contractor's Option

by Richard R. Reusser, (M.ASCE), OMMNI Associates, Inc, Appleton, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Aviation Crossroads: Challenges in a Changing World

Abstract:

This paper summarizes three portland cement concrete airfield pavement recycling projects at the Outagamie County Airport in Appleton, Wisconsin. The specifications for the projects did not require that the contractors recycle existing pavement but rather left the decision up to the contractors based on the economics of the situation. The paper discusses some of the problems encountered during the projects and draws some conclusions about the adequacy of current specifications for using recycled concrete pavement as base course material for new construction.
