Abstract:

From as early as 1988, the Civil/Structural Group of Bechtel Corp.'s Houston Regional Office has viewed its automated production tools as components of a production system. Intergraph's Structural Products were key elements of the system in 1988, and remain so in the current production cycle. Since that time, however, both hardware and software components of the system have changed significantly. This paper discusses these changes and describes various components of the system, such as: Bechtel 3DM, WalkThru, and FOUNDS. The Plant Layout & Piping Group uses Bechtel 3DM to consolidate electronic models prepared by the respective design disciplines and to check for interferences. WalkThru, a software that allows the user to view fully rendered 3DM models, is used for electronic model reviews. FOUNDS, a Bechtel-developed software is used within the system to design typical foundations, and produce the related working drawings. Finally, this paper addresses several changes proposed for the current production system.
