Abstract:

The Illustrative Examples section of the AISI Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual (AISI 1989) demonstrates how to analyze a number of different cold-formed steel sections. This paper applies a general-purpose optimization software package to one of these examples - a hat section - to maximize the bending strength of the beam while maintaining the same volume of steel and depth of section. A mathematical program is formulated with constraints that are derived from the AISI specification.
