Abstract:

A stability analysis of stiffened plates and shells by using degenerated finite elements is presented. The studies are based on a thin shell theory, large deflections, but on an elastic material law and small strains. Weight optimization by applying stiffeners results in sensitive stability problems because eigenvalues may cluster. Such problems can only be treated numerically by using reliable and robust solvers and path-following algorithms.
