The Use of ETFE Foils in Lightweight Roof Constructions

by Craig Schwitter, Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, Bath, United Kingdom,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Spatial, Lattice and Tension Structures

Abstract:

ETFE foils are polymer film sheets which are enclosed in support frames and inflated to provide stable, insulated and transparent roof cushions for lightweight enclosures. This paper describes foil cushion background with specific attention drawn to material properties of ETFE foil and their implications in structural design of cushions and support structure. Several projects are presented to communicate to the reader the possibilities of this material in construction.
