Abstract:

New technologies for asphalt pavement resurfacing are improving dramatically with the advancements being made to related equipment technologies. This paper focuses on the recent developments of a novel procedure for the material handling of the `hot in-place' asphalt recycling process. It addresses the needs of asphalt pavement resurfacing and describes the approach taken to automate and improve the process, which incorporates the development of a nondestructive field sensing process for identifying pavement and material characteristics, a blackboard procedure for field decision-making, based on real-time decision-response to field conditions and information, and a computerized control process which allows the integration of these new technologies with present equipment technology.
