Abstract:

A reliable approach for the determination of the soil hydraulic conductivity function relies on the parameter estimation solution approach in which heterogeneous state of saturation within the sample is accounted for in the analysis of the test data. Accurate test data needed for the analysis can be obtained from a transient flow experiment in which water is drained from soil samples under controlled flow rates using a flow pump. The feasibility of this approach is investigated with a parameter estimation algorithm and a non-linear finite element program which numerically simulates the experimental conditions for any set of constitutive parameters.
