Abstract:

Understanding the relationships among materials, processing, microstructure, and properties is critical in improving material design. This paper outlines an approach for furthering this understanding based on the use of computer modelling, in particular digital-image-based models. Generation of starting microstructures, microstructure evolution based on cellular automation-type rules, and property computation are discussed. The digital-image-based approach provides insights into microstructures-property relationships and offers other advantages such as ease of handling complex shapes and phase distributions, and visualization of the ongoing microstructure development.
